WHO expands Irkutsk follow-up

Oct 7

RTVE reports the WHO again seeking Russian information on suspected plague cases. Juan José Badiola explains pneumonic plague transmission and antibiotic treatment and considers a pandemic unlikely; Maria Van Kerkhove also stresses treatability. Tedros says available information is insufficient for a full risk assessment and offers technical biosafety assistance. The report describes the laboratory employee's death, a second possible pneumonia case reported in media and uncertainty about diagnosis and transmission, while Moscow denies an epidemic risk and alleges disinformation. WHO has not declared an outbreak. A brief prospective Trump–Putin contact mention is retained as context, not a completed call.

At its October 7 briefing WHO seeks fuller laboratory, exposure and contact information after Russia's October 6 Irkutsk reply. It requests verification of a reported second employee with pneumonia, offers infectious-disease and laboratory-safety support if asked, and says member states and IHR focal points were informed that day. WHO cannot identify the worker's causative agent or confirm a laboratory accident or second case, and distinguishes initial limited-information risk estimates from a complete assessment it cannot yet make. Ciobanu criticizes the October 3–6 response delay against the IHR's 24-hour expectation; Tedros awaits a formal second-case response despite an informal denial. This is WHO's later public follow-up, distinct from the October 3 request, October 6 reply and original risk statement. RTVE's same-day account relays WHO's renewed information request, treatability and missing full risk assessment. Badiola considers a pandemic unlikely; Moscow denies an epidemic risk and alleges disinformation. Those qualified and competing source assessments remain attributed. No plague diagnosis, confirmed laboratory accident, second case or WHO outbreak declaration is established.
