AfD seeks Saxony-Anhalt Support remains uncertain
Schulze clarifies CDU's opposition stance
Oct 4
Tagesthemen reports Ulrich Siegmund's planned December bid for Saxony-Anhalt premier and his claim that talks with another parliamentary group and individual MPs are going well. The AfD has 39 votes and needs a partner or at least three outside votes. Other groups deny intending to elect him; the report leaves whether his confidence is bluff or certainty unresolved. Sven Schulze says in Bericht aus Berlin that the CDU will act in opposition and assess individual issues case by case; the reporter says he seeks no AfD agreements but does not wholly exclude cooperation. Stefan Möller presses the AfD to govern and explains a strategy of offering legislation compatible with the CDU/CSU programme, predicting electoral harm if the Union refuses and votes with the left. Earlier Weidel and Chrupalla excerpts show the AfD's ambitions. The report closes by stressing that Siegmund has not been elected. No majority, coalition or predicted effect is established.
During October 4's Bericht aus Berlin live interview from Freyburg, Sven Schulze defines constructive opposition as independently assessing each issue and deciding CDU positions and votes. He rejects direct cooperation with AfD or BSW, participation in their government and coordination on legislation. He says CDU members have repeatedly given oral and written assurances against defections, defends party unity after its unexpected election defeat and argues that an AfD government would depend on BSW and Wagenknecht. His position does not prohibit every coinciding vote or establish an actual defection or government agreement. Tagesschau's same-day retelling reports that CDU MPs will not vote for Siegmund, shows Schulze's case-by-case-position answer and raises the possibility that the stance could undermine the firewall and burden the federal coalition. Its reported investiture-vote position and interpretation remain attributed to that broadcast. The AfD's need for three outside votes and December premiership bid are prospective; no vote or concluded deal is reported.
