Lula's UN multilateralism appeal

Sep 22

Vremya’s Mikhail Akinchenko reviews UN high-level week, citing Lula’s warning about trust, Lavrov’s address, Trump and Pezeshkian on Iran and the Iranian delegation’s contacts with U.S. envoys. It covers Lavrov’s meetings with Rubio, Guterres, Grossi and Wadephul, Putin’s G20 invitation and circulation of a Russian report disputing the Bucha killings. It recalls Trump–Zelenskyy exchanges, an energy-truce proposal, Lavrov’s rejection of a pause in military operations and his comments on U.S. sanctions. The Bucha allegations, hostile characterizations, motives and diplomatic judgments remain the programme’s and speakers’ accounts; contacts and proposals are distinguished from an achieved compromise, and the independently identified appearances and meetings remain separate occurrences.

At the September 22, 2026 UN general debate in New York, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says the UN is failing to prevent war and protect vulnerable people. He criticizes Security Council inaction and veto privileges, warns of a leadership crisis and arms race, and calls on the leaders of Council members to meet. In a later institutional passage he describes the WTO as weakened, condemns tariff coercion and misinformation, recalls deaths he attributes to COVID-19 negligence, and warns that antivaccine campaigns and weakening the WHO increase vulnerability. He closes this argument by invoking the UN's achievements and calling for renewed political will. These are his criticisms and appeals, not adopted reforms or a scheduled summit. Vremya's September 27 roundup excerpts the same criticism that the UN is failing to prevent war and has lost trust; its introductory interpretation remains attributed.
