Geffray meets lycée organizations

Oct 2

In a public Q&A at the Education Ministry in Paris, Nathanaël Combary of Renouveau Lycéen and Louis Letoublon of Les Lycéens describe their afternoon talks with the education minister. Combary welcomes renewed dialogue. Letoublon says they raised mental health, school schedules and buildings, received promises of substantial work and a national consultation, but obtained no concrete commitments and are disappointed. Combary identifies a promised study to improve student representation as an important commitment. Asked about a consultation platform due on Monday, he says it is insufficient, anticipates limited participation and asks pupils to keep conveying their demands. He reports a further ministerial meeting promised for the end of the following week; organizational deliberations and feedback will determine next steps. Both distance their organizations from urban violence. Letoublon attributes it to outsiders rather than pupils engaged in the movement, then also condemns police violence and what he describes as a problematic, systemic public-order doctrine. He calls for continued mobilisation to maintain pressure. Combary urges responsibility and peaceful action, does not call for intensification, but says pupils who still feel unheard may blockade their schools. He seeks dialogue with political representatives. Letoublon prioritizes staff, funding and facilities. He cites 10% of teaching hours not covered, with 19% in the most affected tenth of lycées against 6% in the least affected tenth; these remain his figures. He acknowledges that the organizations do not fully control spontaneous mobilisation and defends pupils' right to act. Combary appeals to regional councils over school buildings and briefly cites Saint-Exupéry in Créteil and Paul Éluard in Saint-Denis. Asked about Tuesday's demonstration, Combary says Renouveau Lycéen must decide internally after pupil feedback. Letoublon says Les Lycéens intends to join the 6 October demonstrations and, more generally, continue mobilisation. The announced participation and further talks are prospective.

On 2 October 2026 in Paris, French lycée organizations met Education Minister Édouard Geffray amid the school blockade movement. In their immediate account of the talks, Louis Letoublon of Les Lycéens says demands on mental health, schedules and buildings brought promises of further work and a national consultation, but no concrete commitments. Nathanaël Combary of Renouveau Lycéen welcomes restored dialogue and identifies a promised study of student representation as an important commitment. He considers the consultation platform due the following Monday insufficient and reports a further meeting promised for the end of the next week. Their staffing and building priorities remain demands; neither the platform launch nor the follow-up meeting is established as completed.
