About this event

Guterres plans Pakistan talks on Iran

Oct 6–8

Farhan Haq announces that António Guterres has left New York for a previously scheduled Pakistan trip, with Tuesday arrival, meetings with Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Asif Ali Zardari, visits to the disaster-management authority and UNMOGIP headquarters, and a Thursday return expected. The programme includes Pakistan's U.S.–Iran mediation. Asked whether Guterres brings concrete proposals, Haq says he will learn about the mediation and discuss ways forward, continuing contacts with Pakistan, Egypt and Qatar; he announces no proposal or agreement.

Oman TV presents Guterres's planned Pakistan leadership talks in the context of support for Pakistani mediation between the United States and Iran. Al Salhi gives October 6–8 for the trip, though the introduction calls it four days. He sees no established new UN initiative, discussing possible recognition, legitimacy and implementation or verification support for Pakistan's mediation and the Islamabad memorandum. These are prospective talks and attributed assessments, not an achieved new agreement or confirmed UN mechanism. In the October 5 UN briefing, Haq confirms that the announced itinerary includes discussing Pakistan's U.S.–Iran mediation. Asked about concrete proposals, he says Guterres will learn about the mediation and discuss ways forward, continuing contacts with Egypt and Qatar. The briefing does not announce a new proposal, peace agreement or completed Pakistan negotiation; the October 6–8 dates remain the planned talks, rather than a finding that they occurred.
