Leiter’s checkpoint injury Kan’s attack and updates
Bell checkpoint ramming critically injures Neria Leiter
Sep 23
Kan reports Neria Leiter critically injured in a ramming attack at the Bell checkpoint and the attacker killed. Correspondents describe his treatment and family response, the investigation and the deployment of another divisional headquarters in the West Bank. They recall the earlier Shukron killing and discuss concern over lone attackers; the late hospital update says Leiter has emerged from emergency surgery but remains extremely serious.
Neria Leiter, a 39-year-old Israeli reservist and son of ambassador Yechiel Leiter, was critically injured in a September 23 vehicle-ramming attack at the Bell checkpoint near Route 443 in the occupied West Bank. Kan reports that a driver accelerated into a joint military-police force at about 5 p.m., then left the vehicle and charged soldiers, who shot him dead. It identifies him as Mahmoud Mohammed Mahmoud Suleiman, 29, from Beit Ur al-Tahta. Security officials describe a premeditated lone-actor attack, with no organizational affiliation found at that stage, and say the vehicle used a plate from an Israeli vehicle taken off the road. Forces enter the village to question relatives. Leiter suffers a severe head injury and undergoes emergency neurosurgery at Shaare Zedek; the later live return says he has left surgery but remains extremely seriously injured. His father is returning from the United States and appeals for prayers. Fox independently carries the critical-injury report and the father's appeal. Kan's discussion distinguishes a general escalation concern from any specific intelligence warning; no recovery or final prognosis is established. The September 24 follow-up says doctors stabilized Leiter's vital signs after multiple overnight operations, but he remains critically ill, sedated and ventilated in intensive care and his life is still in danger. Yechiel Leiter has returned to Israel and speaks at the hospital. The family describes Sarah giving birth nearby after visiting her wounded brother. In the UN address Netanyahu describes visiting the family and appeals for Neria's recovery; his 'two days ago' conflicts with the report's explicit yesterday chronology, so September 23 is retained.
