Darmanin urges Mélenchon to reject campaign violence

Oct 2

Céline Landreau introduces Gérald Darmanin after reporting more than 900 school-blockade actions and nearly 2,000 arrests the previous day, assaults near Rouen, a Nantes school fire and a government crisis response. Challenged by Marc-Olivier Fogiel over a firm prosecution policy and his earlier leniency toward farmers, Darmanin distinguishes legitimate grievances from violence and says attacks on public buildings and police have brought arrests and convictions. He attributes 300 injured police and gendarmes and more than sixty attacked teachers or school leaders to the previous day, describes roughly 2,000 police-custody placements since the movement began and says ninety percent are minors. He says he asked prosecutors to seek parents' civil liability for damage, preferring compensation to detention except in extreme cases, subject to judges accepting prosecutors' requests. He explains limits on immediate trials for minors and says the PJJ should promptly implement judicial measures. He fears further urban violence while recognizing young people's concerns. Fogiel raises LFI's rejection of government allegations; Darmanin accuses Bompard, Mélenchon and the Saint-Denis mayor of encouraging violence, reports an Article 40 referral by the Paris police prefect and asks Mélenchon to commit to a nonviolent presidential campaign. On threatened budget censure, he calls for parliamentary compromise, including with the left, and argues that debt reduction helps poorer households; Fogiel challenges benefit freezes. Asked about Mediapart's previous-day evidence publication concerning alleged antisemitic Bardella messages, Darmanin accuses Bardella of lying but also says the implications for political office depend on irrefutable, uncontested evidence and asks Le Pen whether she would still make him prime minister. Fogiel then challenges Philippe's proposed retirement age of 65 and 45 contribution years. Darmanin says he helped prepare the plan, claims arduous occupations would retire at 63, defends longer work for others and cites his cleaner mother's retirement at 67. He reaffirms support for Philippe and one candidate, calling him best placed to win; his Mélenchon–Le Pen runoff scenario is hypothetical.

During his October 2 RTL interview, Darmanin accuses LFI figures of inflaming the school unrest, describes Bompard as an arsonist playing firefighter and says Mélenchon's change of tone the previous evening came too late. Fogiel raises Bompard's conspiracy-theory criticism and the government's allegation about LFI proxies. Darmanin also criticizes the Saint-Denis mayor, declines to decide whether remarks are unlawful while citing judicial independence, and says the Paris police prefect made an Article 40 referral. He asks Mélenchon to pledge a nonviolent presidential campaign and voices concern about LFI's conduct if election results go against it. These are accusations and a requested commitment, not proof of organized violence, an adjudicated offense or a pledge by Mélenchon.
