October 1 storm disrupts eastern Spain

Oct 1

RTVE reports the first hours of a Mediterranean storm on October 1 and extreme-risk alerts in Castellón, Valencia and Tarragona. Pedro Díaz reports from Vinaròs on intermittent rain becoming stronger, more than 110 litres per square metre in inland towns, halted Renfe services and closed schools and health centres. Anna Lladó describes Catalonia's ES-Alert, precautions and school cancellations. The package reports 130 litres in Eslida, reinforced firefighters and a rescue helicopter, winds above 80 km/h described as wet downbursts in Buñol and El Perelló, 33 Valencian municipalities cancelling classes and rising water at El Vendrell. Carmen Ruiz reports heavy Teruel-area rain, including 56 litres in an hour at Jabaloyas, without serious damage reported in Aragón or an ES-Alert planned there. Mónica López distinguishes observed rain, including 92 litres in forty minutes at Yátova, from forecasts of a wetter overnight period, especially northern Castellón and southern Tarragona. Modelled totals up to 400 litres and the timing of red and orange alerts remain forecasts. Her complete later regional forecast and the final Vinaròs safety update are retained.

RTVE reports heavy rain, wind and extreme-risk warnings in eastern Spain on October 1, with inland Castellón downpours, reinforced emergency services, halted trains, closed schools and health centres and warnings in Valencia and southern Tarragona. Its on-scene reports distinguish actual flooding and rainfall from stronger rain still forecast overnight. Yátova's reported 92 litres in forty minutes, Eslida's 130 litres and the Aragón report of no serious damage remain the source's observations; projected totals up to 400 litres and later alert changes are forecasts.
