Yemenis reach Djibouti Markazi camp under pressure
Yemeni arrivals overwhelm Markazi camp
Date unknown
Tagesschau cites the UN for more than 150,000 displaced by Yemen's fighting and says thousands crossed to Djibouti in recent weeks. Georg Restle reports registration and exhausted families at Markazi camp, which the report places roughly 50 kilometres in a straight line from the capital. An unnamed father describes fleeing massacres with his children by sea; refugees say many were fired upon during the crossing. UNHCR representative Sandrine Desamours describes thirst, hunger, fear and traumatized children. She says a camp designed for 5,000 has received almost 4,000 additional Yemenis and is far beyond capacity, and expects another 10,000. Restle closes by warning that Ethiopia's civil war could also bring tens of thousands. These expected additional movements are not reported as completed.
Recent arrivals from Yemen place Markazi camp in Djibouti beyond its reported 5,000-person capacity. Tagesschau says thousands crossed during the weeks before its October 3 broadcast; Sandrine Desamours says almost 4,000 additional Yemenis have been received and expects another 10,000. Refugees describe flight from attacks, exhaustion and, in some accounts, being fired upon at sea. The UN displacement total above 150,000 concerns Yemen's wider fighting and is distinct from camp arrivals. Predicted additional movement, including possible flight from Ethiopia, is not completed movement. Exact dates of the Yemeni influx are not established.
