WHO launches pregnancy hypertension roadmap

Oct 7

Tedros says WHO and partners are launching a global roadmap on hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, that day. He attributes about sixteen percent of maternal deaths, 42,000 deaths and more than 500,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths to these disorders. He describes gaps in blood-pressure checks, testing, medicines, referrals, skilled staffing and emergency obstetric care. The roadmap aims to address the innovation gap and coordinate investment so proven interventions and future innovations reach women and babies. These are objectives rather than achieved improvements.

On October 7 Tedros says WHO and partners are launching a global roadmap on hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia. It seeks coordinated investment and innovation so proven care and future products reach women and babies, amid gaps in blood-pressure checks, tests, medicines, referrals, skilled staffing and emergency obstetric services. He attributes about sixteen percent of maternal deaths, 42,000 deaths and more than 500,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths to these disorders. The launch is distinct from WHO's October 6 announcement that had planned an October 8 launch and press release; implementation and health outcomes remain prospective.
