Japanese bombing destroys Nankai library
Jul 29, 1937
CCTV's Campus Legacy feature visits Nankai University Library and its 'Know China, Serve China' tradition. It recalls the July 1937 Japanese bombing that destroyed the library, the university's move south and participation with Peking and Tsinghua in National Southwestern Associated University, and the rescue and transport of books. Lian Jinyu describes investigation and public service as educational purposes. Yang Shixian's preserved papers lead into Wang Wei's account of dependence on costly imported pesticides and Yang's decision to change research direction. The report says his team developed a domestic insecticide in 1958 despite shortages and foreign technology restrictions, then describes later chemistry awards and commercial applications without supplying their dates. Li Maolin pledges continued research contributions. CCTV says Nankai has established 114 rural-modernization workstations across all 31 provincial-level regions, with projects applied in 27 provinces over three years; student Kang Zhiqing describes repeated village visits. The complete feature ends with Zhang Boling's patriotic questions voiced by current president Chen Yulu and students.
CCTV recalls the July 1937 Japanese bombing of Nankai University's campus, destruction of its library and rescue of books as faculty and students moved south. It describes eventual participation with Peking and Tsinghua in National Southwestern Associated University and the rescued collections' educational legacy. Yang Shixian is recalled as a book rescuer whose collections remain preserved. The later associated-university formation is a consequence, not an assertion that it happened on the bombing day.
