Reports tally US losses In the war with Iran
CRS updates Iran-war aircraft-loss report
Oct 5
CCTV reports that an October 5 Congressional Research Service report counts 81 U.S. military aircraft damaged or destroyed since February 28. It names several aircraft types, describes the report's press and official sources, and says Congress is considering replacement funding and assessing equipment, tactics and basing. The account also recalls a September 14 Pentagon-watchdog report of hundreds of damaged buildings and more than fifty aircraft affected through June 30, and a Congressional Budget Office estimate of about $38 billion spent through August 1. These differently scoped figures remain attributed; damaged aircraft are not all destroyed and the accounts are not added together.
The October 5 update of a U.S. congressional aircraft-loss report is covered by CCTV as reporting 81 U.S. military aircraft damaged or destroyed since U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran began February 28. CCTV describes congressional assessment of the combat environment, enemy-fire threats and possible equipment, tactics or base-posture changes. This is an attributed loss-and-damage tally, not 81 confirmed shootdowns or aircraft all destroyed. IRINN's October 7 editorial repeats the 81 destroyed-or-severely-damaged aircraft figure, alleges U.S. concealment and recalls Murphy being denied access to a Qatar base. These are the editorial's allegations and framing; the tally is not recast as 81 aircraft shot down, and access denial does not independently prove concealment. CCTV's fuller October 7 China News report names a partial aircraft-type list, identifies news, Defense Department, Central Command and inspector-general material as report sources, and describes Congress's consideration of repair/replacement funding. The October 5 CRS update's 81 includes damage as well as destruction. The same complete report's September 14 watchdog release and CBO spending estimate use different reporting windows and are not additional aircraft totals.
