German pension commission's reform proposals

Jun 23

Tagesschau reports DGB rallies in fifteen cities, with Yasmin Fahimi in Essen defending the recognition of a working life and Andreas Fischer in Leipzig describing fears of longer work. Ver.di’s Frank Werneke argues that ordinary people bear unfair burdens; employers cite demographic change, labour shortages and competition in defending reform. The programme also reports warnings about care and healthcare cuts. Speakers’ judgments and fears remain attributed, distinct from completed policy changes.

The pension commission submits its recommendations on June 23, 2026. Tagesschau's September 26 explanation describes a gradual rise in retirement age, inclusion of self-employed people and MPs, and a funded pension component. It says abolishing deduction-free early retirement after 45 contribution years is intended partly to finance the change, with projected annual savings of about €10 billion. Economist Peter Bofinger argues that investment could raise future pensions and that longer contribution histories already earn larger pensions. The programme places those arguments alongside union protests defending the 45-year entitlement and employers' insistence that demographic, workforce and competitive pressures require reform. These are proposals, arguments and projections, without an enacted overhaul in the report.
